Schools have reached the Scottish Executive’s eco-school target a year ahead of schedule: 80 per cent are registered with the programme, Jack McConnell, the First Minister, announced last week during a visit to Currie Com-munity High. Although this means 2,258 state schools are registered, the figures do not reveal how active they are and the picture is skewed by the fact that many more primary schools are involved than secondaries.

Meanwhile, a number of Scottish primary schools have shared in prize money totalling pound;20,000, funded by ScottishPower, for being “eco-conscious.”

Four in 10 Scottish youngsters put healthy living (43 per cent) as their top concern, way ahead of the environment (28 per cent). The results emerged from an online poll commissioned for the launch of the Hansard Society Scotland’s mock elections for pupils in the run-up to the Scottish elections on May 3. There are 75 schools signed up for the scheme at www.mockelections.co.uk
