At the start of the summer term, the end of the year can be seen shimmering in the distance like a mirage: tantalisingly close but frustratingly out of reach.

As you get closer, though, things start happening that let you know the end is in sight. Many teachers took to Twitter to tell TES about their telltale signs, using the hashtag #ItsEndofTermWhen.

For some, it’s an opportunity to sample a bit of culture. @NickyGNickster tweeted: “We can empty the stinking staffroom fridge of the 20 half-used tubs of spread and jam and fruit with mould on it.”

Others, such as @teacher_darl87, opt to indulge their sweet tooth: “You `accidentally’ eat three boxes of Milk Tray received as presents that you meant to share with family.”

Want to work that chocolate off? You’ll get the chance, said @philippajade, who tweeted: “You play rounders for 6 hours a day...”

But it’s not all fun and sports days. @lilacjames showed the less appealing side of the end of term: “I have to pack up everything and move classrooms yet again...I have moved 12 times in last 15 years!”

With that in mind, it’s good that some teachers, including @1MrMac, have found ways to wind down during lesson time: “The displays come down and the films go on.”
