To add to our list of the top 100 books all children should read before leaving primary school, as voted for by teachers, last week we revealed the top 100 secondary books. And to take the excitement up a level, we set three challenges, giving readers the chance to win pound;10 book tokens.
The first task was to guess the top five secondary books. @halfajack was bang on the money with two of his suggestions: “To Kill a Mockingbird, 1984, The Catcher in the Rye, The Great Gatsby and Hamlet,” he tweeted. Indeed, George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four took the top spot, followed by Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Orwell’s Animal Farm, William Golding’s Lord of the Flies and John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men.
The next challenge was to see how many books teachers had read. “I think my score was 22,” @baracus_ta said. “Just under a quarter.” Meanwhile, @tamsinperry announced her mission to fill the gaps.
Finally, teachers tweeted a photo of their favourite book on the list. “Look how many books I have,” boasted an indecisive @sbrackenridge1. But @fifi250563 was certain of her choice. “This is my favourite book,” she said, holding up Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bront. She was delighted to see it had secured a place in the top 20.
