Here comes the sun (OK, ever the optimist...) and with it comes inspiration for art and design, this week’s Subject Focus. On page 24 Ray Oliver suggests stories about the divine Helios and practical activities with sundials and shadows to warm primary pupils to his theme of art and science.

Mind you, when you open the window to welcome in summer, watch out for Calliphora vomitoria. Unpleasant by name, unpleasant by nature, the common bluebottle is the culprit responsible for many outbreaks of salmonella food poisoning. In Food Safety Week (June 10-16), which aims to put food hygiene at the top of the agenda, we offer a selection of resources to help get the message across (page 10).
