It’s never easy to make sense of war, but when the conflict happened half a century ago the ‘reality’ of it is as distant as the dinosaurs. Our project this week gives a taste of life on the Home Front, when one egg a week and ‘digging for victory’ won the day (page 19). The sheer horror of war can make it a tough subject to teach, and on page 30 we offer an approach to handling the issue in RE. Our report on how newspapers work (page 12) focuses on the events of one day around the world. January 29: paper planes filled the air in Costa Rica... and the US called up 16,000 reserve troops to go to the Gulf.
