Roger Pope’s article “Way over the rainbow” (24 February) raises an interesting question about home-educated children.

Given that there are many thousands of children now being home educated, it seems incredible to me that no obligatory formal checks are made on their provision.

I have been an associate adviser working with home-educating families for eight years. An ever-increasing number of parents are refusing to reassure my colleagues and me, even through written reports or photographic evidence, that their children are receiving an education “appropriate to their age and ability”.

This is a worrying trend with potential serious implications for many home-educated children where we (the advisers) are often the only service with regular contact.
