The southern US state of Alabama - the fiefdom for years of Christian conservatives - has voted overwhelmingly to allow its citizens to gamble, all in the name of helping needy students, writes Tim Cornwell in Los Angeles. New governor Don Siegelman has campaigned on the single theme of launching a lottery to fund school computers, nursery school programmes, and college scholarships.
