Every pupil and teacher in West Lothian is being allocated an e-mail address. The 26,000 addresses are designed to accompany pupils throughout their school lives, even if they move school. The first two digits represent the year of entry to the school, the third - a zero or one - indicates their sex, and the remaining five digits are run out in order. The authority hopes to let the children have aliases so they can use simple addresses such as johnsmith1westlothian.org.uk
