More than 250 P5s from five Dundee schools gathered at the city’s Central Library for a storytelling session to celebrate the first year of the project, run by the National Literacy Trust initiative and funded by Starbucks Coffee Company UK. The initiative will involve 25 primary schools and 7,500 free books will reach the hands of 2,500 children (three per child) to increase reading for pleasure among primary pupils.

One in five Scots struggles with basic skills. The new project aims to impact positively on pupils by offering a choice of books and encouraging reading for pleasure. They can choose from a wide variety of titles, including fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels and comics. The strong partnership with the library service ensures that children become familiar with their local library and can reap the benefits of reading for many years to come.
