English teachers have stepped up their fundamental challenge to Higher Still by raising almost 1,200 signatures questioning the internal assessment at the core of the reforms.

Departments in 165 secondaries have backed the campaign by Teach!, the Lothians-based pressure group. Authorities are privately worried that the campaign could derail the reforms.

Tony McManus, an English teacher at Queensferry High, said: “We want a rigorous and credible system and that’s external assessment.”
