What it’s about

For a primary activity full of wizardry and magic, try TESiboard’s Wizard Assistant resource. It’s an interactive fantasy tale with colourful illustrations and a simple text for young readers.

To use it, you turn the pages using the arrows. The magic wand separates the characters and props from the background for pupils to rebuild the scene. Reset the original page by pressing the book icon at the top. There is a range of TESiboard resources to accompany The Wizard’s Assistant storybook. All are available online. The attached Word document also has all the scenes from the story, for writing and sequencing tasks. Try this resource and tell us what you think.

For more fantasy and literacy resources from TESiboard, visit the collection online. Shellp_1984 has shared a wealth of topic planning for castles, knights and dragons - it is saving teachers lots of time.

Calling all budding writers

Inkhead is a group of writers who believe you are never too young to start writing. It is running a competition for writers aged seven to 16, open until 12 April 2012. The challenge is to write a short story of no more than 1,000 words with one of the following titles: Fireflies and Mosquito Bites; The Day of the Zombie; The Mysterious Case of the Missing Millionaire; One Day in My Future; It’s OK Not to be OK.

Encourage your pupils to “loosen their pens” and get creative. There are cash prizes up for grabs and the competition could inspire the next JK Rowling. Inkhead runs creative-writing workshops for children aged seven to 14 to encourage them to create fiction through writing exercises.
