Adventure on the doorstep

Thousands of primary pupils from Scotland’s biggest city are finding out about country life this month.

Glasgow’s Country to the City Days programme, organised by the council’s land and environmental services, provides educational awareness for P6 pupils. More than 2,000 children from 58 primaries are visiting the Springburn, Bellahouston, Kelvingrove, Maxwell and Tollcross parks. The excursions take in falconry, horse and dray rides, sheep-shearing, cow- milking, reptiles, Highland cattle, and other activities and displays. Countryside rangers are around to answer questions.

James McNally, executive member of land and environmental services, said the visits turned the parks into “living classrooms” and would encourage more people to use the city’s open spaces.
