Pupils in the eco-committee at Blackfriars Primary, in the Gorbals area, have appealed for support in an online vote to decide the winner. The school, whose roll includes asylum seekers and other children from around the world, is creating a “much-needed” international garden for its pupils and infants at neighbouring Laurieston Day Nursery. While the school organises regular fundraising efforts, staff say they cannot generate as much as other areas of the city without extra help.
The school holds awards for Excellence in International Education and Eco- Schools. The garden will build on both, but at present a six-foot fence divides the nursery and the ground earmarked for the garden.
“Most of the other schools are just wanting to replace an old gate,” said headteacher John Lawson. “We are different. We want to create a brand-new play area that currently can’t be accessed by the nursery.”
Voting closes at midnight on June 30.
