Estimates of the first appointments required at the start of the session will rise substantially over the next 10 years. This coming session, nearly 700 new teachers are needed for pre-school and primary - up 270 - on last year’s figure. Numbers will continue to rise steadily to more than 1,400 in 2010-11.

In secondary, 72 fewer teachers are apparently needed in secondary, down to 587. But numbers will rise to nearly 880 within three years before falling back to 770.
