Enthusiastic groups of Higher English pupils are bolstering the audience for the Edinburgh Lyceum production of Julius Caesar. Director Mark Thomson has chosen to stage the play in modern dress with Mamp;S supplying the costumes and getting a suitable credit in the programme.

The suspension of disbelief was severely compromised for one group from West Lothian - and for those in the stalls around them - when Antony, holding up a bloodied polycotton shirt, proclaimed: “You all do know this mantle. I remember the first time ever Caesar put it on . . .”

One youngster, totally absorbed in the emotion of the moment, responded: “Aye, my big brer has yin like that for his work.”
