It works by forming a long-term partnership where at least two primary or secondary schools from at least two countries use ICT to carry out some form of pedagogical activity. It can be an exchange between two or more teachers, teams of teachers, departments, librarians, headteachers. Schools are expected to interact over an extended period and to involve a wide range of subjects and topics.
Unlike Comenius projects, eTwinning aims to generalise school twinning through the internet and offers pedagogical and technical support, but not funding, which should mean less administrative work for the schools.
