The programme for the 20th Edinburgh International Science Festival, launched earlier this week, offers young minds the “ah-ha” moments in science experimentation that should inspire them to pursue their interest more deeply.

Everything from dinosaurs to robots and Egyptian mummies to mysterious plants can be found from March 25-April 5 at a number of events across Edinburgh.

For adults, one of the main attractions should be the Edinburgh Medal address on March 31 by Chris Rapley, director of the Science Museum in London and former director of the British Antarctic Survey.

Professor Rapley is this year’s winner of the Edinburgh Medal and his address, “Great while it lasted: now what?”, will look at how we have exploited carbon-based energy sources and how we can meet our future energy needs - a particularly apposite topic in the light of the current nuclear energy debate.
