IT WAS was with some sadness that I read the comments of John Durant on the present teaching of science (TES, November 27).

I teach in a rural 10-form entry high school. In each of our Years 12 and 13 the norm is for two biology, chemistry and physics groups, one social biology group and one GNVQ advanced science group. It seems quite clear that this uptake reflects the inspirational and exciting presentation of science in Years 9 to 11.

In recent years we have appointed young teachers of exceptional talent who have joined experienced, enthusiastic staff. Perhaps the science teaching scene is not as boring and desolate as that assumed in your article!
