Heads and other educational “decision-makers” are being offered an opportunity to get first-hand practice of schooling in other European countries. The European Union’s Arion study programme runs five-day subsidised visits between September and June each year. Each visit has a theme such as special educational needs, modern languages or adult education.

Applications are submitted via the local authority or employer and those who are successful receive a bursary of e850 (pound;520) to help offset travel, subsistence and accommodation costs.

The programme of visits - which is often oversubscribed - can be found in the Arion catalogue published this month.

Arion, which is part of the Socrates programme, is aimed at inspectors, advisers, teacher-trainers and education officers as well as heads, deputies and assistant heads.
