(Photograph) - As some 2,500 12 to 18-year-olds from 47 countries took part in the European Youth Olympics, teachers, nutritionists and sports administrators gathered in Bath to discover how they could produce Olympic medallists for the next millenium, writes Diane Spencer.
The event was timely as today the Prime Minister is to announce long-awaited plans for the future of sport. It will not be a White Paper, as originally envisaged by Sports Minister Iain Sproat, but a policy paper.
Proposals to set up specialist sports schools have been dropped.
It will not propose new legislation or major changes in the school curriculum.
