UNTIL JULY 16: CITY OF LONDON FESTIVAL.

Classical music, dance, jazz, drama, literature, visual arts, film, a youth education project, street theatre and lots of City walks are on offer this year. Highlights include: Verdi’s Requiem in St Paul’s Cathedral, July 13, 7.30pm; and The Tempest, a concert dramatisation of Shakespeare’s play to the accompaniment of the joyful Restoration music of Purcell and his contemporaries, Guildhall Great Hall, July 16, 7.30pm. UNTIL OCTOBER 4: CHAGALL: LOVE AND THE STAGE

Mural paintings created in the 1920s for the auditorium of the State Yiddish Theatre in Moscow are getting their first British showing at the Royal Academy of Arts, Piccadilly, London W1. They will be complemented by some of Chagall’s costume and set designs and paintings which reflect his great love for his wife. The exhibition focuses on the eight years Chagall spent in Russia at the time of World War I and the October Revolution. Details: 0171 300 8000.

JULY 5: FOR COMPASSION, NOT GAIN.

The tale of St Thomas’s from medieval sanctuary to Victorian hospital will be told at the Old Operating Theatre, Museum and Herb Garrett, 9a St Thomas’s Street, London SE1, 2.30pm, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Health Service. JULY 6-26: SHREWSBURY SCIENCE FESTIVAL.

Take an imaginary space flight from Earth to the outer edges of the solar system in the Astrodome mobile planetarium, visit an exhibition on “Women into science and engineering” featuring hands-on technological activities for girls and check out the scientific trade fair and careers convention. For schools there is a Rainforest Roadshow, starring stick insects, beetles, tropical moths and tarantulas. Details: 01743 243424.

JULY 7-11: VISUAL ARTS AT THE GROVE

Sixth-formers from The Grove School, St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, are exhibiting their work in the town’s Utopia Gallery. Disciplines covered include: printmaking, photography, fashion, sculpture, drawing and painting. Details: Roger Talbot, 01424 431691.

JULY 11-12: BROWSE AND PLAY

The Association of Woodwind Teachers invites you to browse through an extensive stock of music for winds, and enjoy a party at June Emerson’s, Ampleforth, Yorkshire. JULY 11-19: CITY LEAP ‘98

A spectacular evening lantern parade through Regent’s Park featuring stilt walkers and jugglers and a free giant shadow-puppet performance in the open air kicks off this youth arts festival.
