DECEMBER 4 AND 10 CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR AND CEILIDH

Sutton House, Hackney’s only Tudor mansion, will be transformed into Aladdin’s Cave for the craft fair which will run from 11am to 5pm, admission Pounds 1.50, accompanied children under 14 free. At the ceilidh, which starts at 7.30pm, there will be traditional Scottish celebrations, music and dancing. Tickets: Pounds 10 including supper. DECEMBER 6 CAREERS FOR GEOGRAPHERS SYMPOSIUM Organised by Royal Geographical Society at 1 Kensington Gore, London SW7. Speakers include: Elspeth Insch, chairman of RGS education committee, and Vanessa Lawrence, technical director, Longman GeoInformation. DECEMBER 9 UNTIL SUMMER 1995 SUN A-SHINE, RAIN A-FALL: LONDON TRANSPORT’S WEST INDIAN WORKFORCE Thousands of people came from the Caribbean to Britain during the 50s and 60s to work for London Transport. This exhibition at the LT Museum, Covent Garden, London WC2, reveals the role they played and their influence on the social and cultural life of London. An actor will play a 1950s Tube guard and there will be family activities with a Caribbean theme. Details: Gaye Littmoden, 071 379 6344.

DECEMBER 12 MEMORIAL SERVICE Dr Alec Dickson, founder of Community Service Volunteers and Voluntary Service Overseas, died on September 23. DECEMBER 16 PRIMARY RETURN TO TEACHING COURSE Taster day for teachers wishing to sample this new course, organised by the Roehampton and West London Institutes. Venue: Roehampton Institute, Roehampton Lane, London SW15. The course will update students on recent educational legislation and curriculum practice and include school placements and careers advice.
