SEPTEMBER 23-30 NATIONAL BREAD WEEK. Primary school children are invited to organise sponsored walks in their grounds throughout September in aid of the British Heart Foundation and their schools.

They can also raise dough by baking “healthy, hearty buns” at school to sell to parents and fellow pupils. A Bread for Life athlete, such as Tony Jarrett, world 110m hurdle silver medallist, will visit the top fundraising school.

SEPTEMBER 23-24. 17TH CENTURY HARVEST CELEBRATION The History Re-enactment Workshop will “live for the day” in the 17th-century Clarke Hall in Wakefield as members of the Clarke family and their friends and servants.

Tickets: Pounds 3 adults, Pounds 6 family, Pounds 1.50 concessions. On November 17, 7.15-10 pm, a performance of “Uneasy Lies the Head” by Arthur Starkie will chronicle the life and times of Charles I and the English Civil War. SEPTEMBER 26 AND OCTOBER 2. INDEPENDENT APPEALS AUTHORITY FOR SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS The IAASE will hear appeals concerning GCSE English literature and GCSE information technology respectively at Newcombe House, 45 Notting Hill Gate, London W11, 10 am.
