Cast iron show An exhibition that puts the spotlight on one of Scotland’s best kept architectural secrets opens early in the New Year at Museum Nan Eilean in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis. The show, mounted by Historic Scotland, highlights the decorative cast iron work that graces approximately 70 buildings in the island town.
Stornoway was spared the Second World War initiative that removed railings and cast iron decoration from towns and cities to be recycled for munitions. An education programme accompanies the exhibition.
Mungo Park
An exhibition examining the short but eventful life of Scottish surgeon and explorer Mungo Park has opened at Tweeddale Museum and Gallery in Peebles.
Park, born near Selkirk in 1771, made two trips to Africa to explore the course of the River Niger and search for the fabled Timbuktu.
On his first trip aged 23, Park spent four months in captivity before escaping and returning to Scotland, where he wrote Travels in Interior Africa. He made a second expedition in 1805 but he and his companions drowned near Bussa in Nigeria the following year. The exhibition runs until April 2007. T 01721 724820.

Volleyball
The first national schools’ festival of the season is at Grangemouth Sports Centre on February 2. The event, for S2 and S3 pupils, will be on a 4v4 format staged countrywide from February to April.
