Suffragette show

An exhibition that charts the history of the women’s suffrage movement in Scotland and tells the story of feisty campaigners such as Anna Munro and Agnes Brown, has opened in the main hall of the Scottish Parliament and runs until March 9. “If I Can’t Vote, I Don’t Count” uses photographs, objects and archive material to show that Emmeline, Christabel and Sylvia Pankhurst were not the only females fighting for women’s suffrage in the UK.

While campaigners in London protested outside Buckingham Palace and Downing Street, suffragettes in Scotland were also becoming increasingly militant.

A portrait of the king was slashed at the Royal Academy in Edinburgh, an attempt was made to blow up Burns’s Cottage and slates were thrown at Winston Churchill from a rooftop in Dundee. Scottish women fighting for the right to vote also went to jail and were force-fed after going on hunger strike.
