UNTIL DECEMBER 31 PHOTOGRAPHERS’ LONDON: 1839-1994 Photographs of famous landmarks and Londoners in everyday situations, or celebrating major events such as George IV’s coronation and VE Day, at the Museum of London, EC2. Photographers represented include: William Fox Talbot, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bill Brandt, George Rodger and Bert Hardy. From October 22-29, children will meet “The unobserved observer”, an actor in role as a 19th-century photographer using various devices to disguise his camera to catch his subjects unposed. FROM OCTOBER 21 NELSON, LIFE AND LEGEND To coincide with the 190th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, is launching a major exhibition. Artifacts will include: a dramatic computer-animated version of the battle from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the musket ball which killed Nelson and the uniform he was wearing when he died. OCTOBER 21-28 RUPERT AND THE MUSEUM MYSTERY Performance trail for children aged five upwards in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Rupert Bear’s first appearance in the Daily Express. OCTOBER 23-29 HALF-TERM FUN AT THE PALACE Children visiting Brighton’s Royal Pavilion can play a giant “Snakes and Dragons” game and follow an “Odd one out” trail. In “Crowns and coronets” and “Pavilion portraits” workshops they will create designs fit for a monarch and larger-than-life portraits of George IV and Queen Victoria using fabric and collage. OCTOBER 24 HOW EVOLUTION HAPPENED: UNRAVELLING THE TREE OF LIFE Free lecture at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, 21 Albemarle Street, London W1, 1pm, to be given by Dr Paul Harvey, zoology department, Oxford University. Evolutionary trees showing the relationship among animal and plant groups are important for forensic and medical science. They tell us when pairs of species last shared a common ancestor and help solve important questions in ecology, development and epidemiology. Details: 0171 409 2992.

NOVEMBER 1 STOPPING BULLYING Workshop in Bletchley, Milton Keynes, for teachers and school support staff organised by National Coalition Building Institute and the Milton Keynes Anti-Bullying Network.
