UNTIL JANUARY 5 MEANINGFUL MAKERS

An exhibition at Watershed, Bristol, of photography-based work by local schools resulting from three residencies and linked to the school curriculum. Among the displays are collage constructions by a primary class of themselves in their chosen future careers, and “Home”, a year-long project carried out by a GCSE art class, which included a week with a primary class. UNTIL NOVEMBER 21 TOP MARKS ART

An exhibition at the London Institute, 65 Davies Street, W1, of work by fine art students who obtained a first-class honours degree from one of the institute’s five colleges (these include Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design and London College of Fashion). It is a lively mixture of painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, combined media, film and video and theatre design. Details: 0171 514 6000.

STARTING NOVEMBER 5 FREEDOM AND CONTROL IN EDUCATION

Melanie Walker, of the University of the Western Cape Academic Development Centre, is to give the first of a series of free lectures at the Institute of Education, Cambridge, 5.15 pm. Other speakers include: Professor David Hargreaves, Cambridge Institute (November 26); Professor Denis Lawton, London Institute of Education (February 11); and Professor Sheila Riddell, Stirling University (May 13). NOVEMBER 15 OXFAM’S FAST FOR BASIC RIGHTS

Schoolchildren are invited to challenge poverty by getting sponsored to give something up for the day, be it a meal, sweets, or even not wearing a school uniform. Funds raised will go to Oxfam’s vital emergency and development work in over 70 countries. A teachers’ pack is available which focuses on Oxfam projects in Bangladesh, Kenya and Brazil, and staff in local Oxfam offices will be happy to give a slide presentation at your school. Beryl Loveridge’s contribution to the education of girls in Islington will be celebrated at St Silas Church, Penton Street, London N1, 2.30pm, and afterwards at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School. Miss Loveridge, formerly head of Starcross School, retired as head of EGA School in April 1994 and died in June 1996. Details: Carole Uncle, 0171 837 0739.

NOVEMBER 21 METROPOLITAN EDUCATION CONVENTION

Education Horizons’ event for heads and governors at The Novotel, Hammersmith, London W6. Speakers: Professor Alan Smithers, Brunel University, and Dr Nick Tate, chief executive, School Curriculum and Assessment Authority.
