LAND OF LAUNDRIES

Al Johnson’s installation at the Ragged School Museum of East End Life, 46-50 Copperfield Road, London E3, celebrates the unsung heroines of the washtub. Seven pairs of bronzed hands trapped in pillories set on plinths engage in soaping, pegging and folding. The plinths are connected by a stream of white laundry stitched with stories, songs, verse and anecdotes told by laughing women. Some of the recorded voices belong to women living in Hackney.
