JULY 1-NOVEMBER 18 QUEST FOR CAMELOT: MOVIES, MYTHS AND THE MAGIC SWORD Cross the drawbridge into a “world of medieval pageantry where Merlin steps out of the shadows, dragons breathe oceans of fire and the damsels are always in distress” at the Museum of the Moving Image, South Bank, London SE1. JULY 1 NOISE AWARENESS DAY Barking dogs, burglar alarms, music blaring from speakers are just some of the noises which affect us, especially in summer when windows are open and everyone wants to enjoy gardens and parks. How can the community fight this? Hexham middle school pupils are performing this music and dance drama, written by themselves, at Queen’s Hall Arts Centre, Hexham, Northumberland, 7pm. JULY 4-5 SEE THE THRUST CAR Following the University of Wales in Swansea’s involvement in designing its aerodynamic shape, the land-speed record breaking car is “coming home” to spend a weekend on public display there. It will be the focus of events and entertainment. Details: 01792 295050.

JULY 7 RNIB VISION 98 Free national exhibition held by the Royal National Institute for the Blind at Kensington Town Hall, London W8, 10am-6pm. The programme includes a seminar (fee pound;15) on the latest education developments for visually-impaired children to be given by Paul Ennals, RNIB’s director of education and employment, and a workshop for teachers of VI children with severe learning difficulties (fee pound;15). JULY 8-15 WAYS WITH WORDS Kate Adie, Roy Hattersley, Roy Strong, Ben Okri, Mary Wesley, Tom Paulin, Mario Vargas Llosa, Juliet Stevenson and Claire Tomalin are among those speaking at this literature festival in Dartington Hall, Devon. The programme includes: workshops, writing picnics, story walks and a cabaret with Fascinating Aida.
