BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE

The Philharmonia Orchestra is performing Bart“k’s famous work in the Royal Festival Hall, South Bank, London SE1, 7.30pm. The performance is linked to a major education project, through which students, working with a director and players from the Philharmonia, will create a Bluebeard’s Castle in the RFH foyer and give free performances around the main concert. Details: 0171 921 0867. There is also a study day with contributions from performers and the chance to hear the Philharmonia prepare for the concert. PHOTOS AND PHANTASM: HARRY JOHNSTON IN THE CARIBBEAN

These 70 images, taken between 1908-1909 by geographer, explorer and colonial official, Sir Harry Johnston and on display at the Royal Geographical Society, 1 Kensington Gore, London SW7, have until now languished unseen at the RGS as fragile glass plate negatives. The British Council exhibition will then tour Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, Cuba and Haiti until October 17. Free admission. Details: Sean Williams, BC, 0171 389 3047.

BRADFORD FILM FESTIVAL

New films from Tarantino, the Coen Brothers and Woody Allen will make their British debut at Bradford’s Pictureville Cinema, National Museum of Photography, Film and Television. Other features include: action masterclasses for young filmmakers (professional or student); a widescreen weekend of classic 70mm and Cinerama retrospectives; and the Shine award for the best short film entered in the Festival competition by a young European director. Young musicians’ platform in the Purcell Room, South Bank Centre, London SE1, 7.30pm. Trained at top music conservatories around the world, the artists have won many awards. Mignon, who has been abducted and raised by a troupe of travelling actors, falls in love with Wilhelm, but her love is unrequited. Will all end happily? SPIRIT OF LEARNING FORUM

Organised by The Bridge Trust at the Global Retreat Centre, Nuneham Courteney, Oxford, this forum aims to help teachers and parents to develop children’s creativity, social awareness, values, concentration and listening skills and make the classroom a calmer place. Presentations and workshops discussions will include: soul-centred education, meditation in the classroom, ecological awareness, education in human values, holistic approaches to education, self-esteem, home schooling and personal and spiritual development.
