UNTIL JANUARY 24 LONDON INTERNATIONALMIME FESTIVAL The highlight this year is “Space Panorama”, the story of the Apollo moon landing narrated by Gavin Robertson and dramatised by Andrew Dawson using only his hands, January 17, ICA Theatre. Other acts include: Yvan the Impossible, spectacular juggling from Quebec, free at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London SE1, January 16-17; and the Russian clown troupe, Derevo, with “Once”, at QEH until January 17.

NTIL MARCH 7 PROPHETS AND PILGRIMS: RUSKIN, PROUST AND NORTHERN GOTHIC This exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh, explores the influence of Victorian art critic and theorist, John Ruskin (1819-1900) on such important 19th-century figures as the French writer, Marcel Proust (1871 1922), who spent six years translating Ruskin’s work into French. It also focuses on Ruskin’s writings on Gothic architecture. Associated events include Ruskin’s Edinburgh lectures - actor Paul O’Keefe delivers the first in February. JANUARY 18, 19 THE DIGITAL AGE This year’s Institution of Electrical Engineers’

Faraday lecture tour is kicking off at the Gulbenkian Theatre, Kent University, Canterbury, 2pm, 6.30pm (also 10am on day two). Supported by Kent Council and the Oracle software company, the presentation focuses on digital broadcast radio and television, how it works and why it’s better than analogue. JANUARY 26 CHAMBER MUSIC CONCERT The Imperial War Museum is presenting this concert at the Wigmore Hall, London W1, 7.30pm, on the eve of the 64th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

In aid of Imperial’s Holocaust Education Fund, it will feature Mendelssohn’s Trio in C Minor and Schubert’s Trio in E Flat with Raphael Wallfisch on cello, Jeremy Menuhin on piano and Philippe Graffin on violin. The museum is opening a new Holocaust wing in 2000. Details: 0171 935 2141.

EUROPEAN YOUNG CONSUMER COMPETITION Groups of aspiring researchers and writers aged 10 to 14 are invited to produce a brochure or short video on the impact of the Euro on areas such as travel, trade, commerce and financial services.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 20 UK entries, with the best team receiving 1,000 Ecus (worth approximately pound;685) and having their entry go forward to the European final. Final date for enrolment is January 18 and completed work must be submitted by March 26. The refugees are from countries including Eritrea, Kosovo, Somalia, Sudan, Sri Lanka (Tamil) and Afghanistan.

SOME TRUTHS The Museum of the Moving Image, South Bank, London SE1, is looking for films made before 1975 on any amateur format (9.5mm, 16mm, 8mm or Super 8). Call 0171 815 1339 for an application form, which must be submitted by January 31.

Selected films will be screened in the MOMI cinema on March 10, providing a revealing look at people’s lives.
