NTIL MARCH 7 PROPHETS AND PILGRIMS: RUSKIN, PROUST AND NORTHERN GOTHIC This exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh, explores the influence of Victorian art critic and theorist, John Ruskin (1819-1900) on such important 19th-century figures as the French writer, Marcel Proust (1871 1922), who spent six years translating Ruskin’s work into French. It also focuses on Ruskin’s writings on Gothic architecture. Associated events include Ruskin’s Edinburgh lectures - actor Paul O’Keefe delivers the first in February. Faraday lecture tour is kicking off at the Gulbenkian Theatre, Kent University, Canterbury, 2pm, 6.30pm (also 10am on day two). JANUARY 26 CHAMBER MUSIC CONCERT The Imperial War Museum is presenting this concert at the Wigmore Hall, London W1, 7.30pm, on the eve of the 64th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
In aid of Imperial’s Holocaust Education Fund, it will feature Mendelssohn’s Trio in C Minor and Schubert’s Trio in E Flat with Raphael Wallfisch on cello, Jeremy Menuhin on piano and Philippe Graffin on violin. The museum is opening a new Holocaust wing in 2000. Details: 0171 935 2141.
EUROPEAN YOUNG CONSUMER COMPETITION Groups of aspiring researchers and writers aged 10 to 14 are invited to produce a brochure or short video on the impact of the Euro on areas such as travel, trade, commerce and financial services.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 20 UK entries, with the best team receiving 1,000 Ecus (worth approximately pound;685) and having their entry go forward to the European final. Final date for enrolment is January 18 and completed work must be submitted by March 26.
