UNTIL MAY 15 TUDOR COSTUMES

Since Henry VIII and Elizabeth I were frequent visitors to Penshurst Place and Gardens in Tonbridge, Kent, it is the ideal setting for this display of costumes from film and television series about the two famous monarchs. Many scenes were filmed at Penshurst. The most elaborate costume is “Armada”, worn by Glenda Jackson in her role as Elizabeth R. Details: 01892 870307.

UNTIL AUGUST 2 LANDMINES: THE HUMAN COST

A look at the use of landmines in modern warfare and what is being done to reduce the threat they pose to civilians. This exhibition at the Imperial War Museum, London SE1, includes examples of landmines, photographs, films and material relating to the late Princess Diana’s involvement in publicising this worldwide problem. APRIL 24 ALICE WALKER LITERARY TALK

The Pulitzer prizewinner and author of The Color Purple is participating in Written America, the literary strand of Inventing America, a year-long celebration of American culture at the Barbican, Silk Street, London EC2, 7.30pm. APRIL 25 UNIVERSITY OF WALES, BANGOR: OPEN DAY

APRIL 27-MAY 1 NATIONAL SCHOOL MEALS WEEK

Take your class on a food safari this week and show them how a healthy diet helps preserve endangered species and the human race. School caterers can test their culinary talents with novel recipe ideas linked to the theme of the day - Monday will be dedicated to apes, Tuesday to elephants, Wednesday to big cats, Thursday to pandas and Friday to dolphins. Menus could include: orang-u-tangy chicken, Tusk-any bean casserole, chimp chump chops, Lion-aise potatoes and safari-so-good pizza. Cash prizes for school equipment and trips to nature reserves are on offer along with holiday vouchers for kitchen staff and Kenyan Safari holidays for individual pupils.
