Everybody has a story

May fair provides forum for multicultural approach to studies.

The Young Historian Scheme (which is run under the umbrella of the Historical Association) has invited organisations from as many different ethnic backgrounds and cultures and areas of history as possible to exhibit or sell their resources or just simply to promote their organisation at a fair on Saturday, May 13, at St Mary Newington Church Hall, Kennington Park Road, London SE11, admission free.

It is hoped that the fair will provide a forum where the different histories of the rich multicultural society in which we live can be displayed so that teachers can come and explore the wealth of resources and discover new and innovative ways of teaching national curriculum history. For local historians and people who simply enjoy history, the fair will add a new dimension to their way of thinking and broaden the scope for learning about different periods.

Exhibitors include the Refugee Council; the Association for the Study of African, Caribbean and Asian Culture and History in Britain; the Black Cultural Archives; Ethnic Communities Oral History Project; Age Exchange Theatre Trust; East London Harmony Educational Project; Women, Heritage and Museums; the British Association for Local History; English Heritage; the Department of Sound Records of the Imperial War Museum; Lambeth Chinese Community Association and many more.

The overall purpose of Young Historian Scheme is to encourage and facilitate the study of history in schools. It seeks to help history students and their teachers to become more confident of the value of studying history as a school subject, to extend the opportunities available for involvement in activities which make the study of history more enjoyable and stimulating and to generate among the public a better appreciation of the importance of history in the education of children. It supports good work in schools and rewards and disseminates it.
