City and Guilds and the Northern Examinations and Assessment Board this week announced “a formal alliance” to make applications for all their GCSEs, A-levels and general national vocational qualifications possible through the NEAB and to manage jointly proposed academic and vocational reforms.

The alliance follows similar links, including a merger set for the New Year between the Business and Technology Education Council and the University of London Examination and Assessment Council.

Such alliances and mergers are also expected to help both meet the recommendations of Sir Ron Dearing and Dr John Capey whose reviews of post-16 qualifications and the future of GNVQs called for closer links between vocational and academic exams.
