Exams out of this real world

I am a newly qualified teacher at a Bradford special needs school, where I am the art teacher. Why should teachers such as me be able to convert 2085 into a percentage in three seconds?

In the real world we have time and calculators and no pressure of knowing that, if we get it wrong, we will lose our whole careers.

If I fail the test I will have wasted five years of further educaion, for which I had to take out four student loans, as well as borrowing money from relatives and the bank. And then there is the humiliation - all for a maths test of 48 mins.

I doubt that the Deparmtment for Education and Employment will be there to pick up the pieces when I am trying to work out my future in the job centre queue.
