Nearly three out of four people support publication of exam results and more than half think exams are the best way of judging academic ability according to the latest British Social Attitudes, based on a survey of more than 3,000 people.

The level of demand for more spending has remained fairly constant over the last decade, says the report. Education has come consistently second only to health in priority for extra money. Last year, well over half said it was their first or second priority, even though 75 per cent did not have children in the household.
