Anthea Millett, director of the Teacher Training Agency, denying that a national curriculum for teacher training “represented an assault on academic and professional freedom”, asks (TES, September 20): “Would you be happy with a doctor who was free to choose from a range of methods while doing operations?”

Were I about to face the surgeon’s knife, I would indeed prefer to trust his professional expertise and trained ability to choose a method suited to my own individual case, free of amateurish interference from a government motivated by political short-termism.
