Primary and secondary pupils have used film, music and drama to tell the story of the impact of slavery in East Renfrewshire, where the National Trust for Scotland’s Greenbank House, built by slave-owner Robert Allason, is a very visible sign of the local wealth generated through the slave trade.
The year-long project was showcased last week at Eastwood Theatre in a multimedia performance, “Just Like Us”, by pupils from Busby, Carolside and Netherlee primaries and Williamwood High. The project, started in 2007 to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery, was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The artwork made by pupils can be viewed on the project’s website. It includes an article by local artist Brian Weightman, who worked with the schools.
