A competition launched this year seeks the UK’s most promising young designers. Students studying for GCSE or A-level are invited to enter.

The Young Designer of the Year competition comprises two broad categories: product design and graphic design. Students are encouraged to submit innovative project work from the current academic year. The entries will be judged by a panel of leading designers and design educators.

The winners will be the UK’s automatic finalists for the Commonwealth Young Designer Awards taking place in New Zealand this August. More than 25 Commonwealth countries are to take part and finalists will have the chance to sit in master classes with some of the world’s best designers.

Michael Thomson, organiser of the UK award, says: “There is currently no national platform for promoting best practice in design education at secondary level in the UK. The Young Designer of the Year competition will provide this national focus and, in addition, will be an opportunity for showcasing UK design talent abroad.”

Entries must be received by Monday, June 23. For more information send an A4 SAE to Michael Thomson at Design Connect, 89B St John’s Way, London N19 3QU.
