I am 56 and a head of history in a comprehensive. The department always does better than the rest at A-levels and GCSEs. How will I be affected by the staffing review changes, and should I consider early retirement?

You need to monitor how your school is intending to introduce the changes associated with the staffing review. Is it offering any safeguards during the transition phase up until 2008, or introducing the changes as soon as possible? You have a right to be consulted during the review. Keep an eye on developments and in touch with your professional association. While early retirement may be a possibility, you are unlikely to get any enhancement of your pension. Also consider where you will be in salary terms after the removal of management points.
