Fall in maths degree applications

Latest figures from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service confirms that the number of students starting maths degrees last autumn was down 4.7 per cent. This is bad news for recruitment to secondary teacher training in three years’ time. However, the figures for undergraduate teacher-training courses were up 1.1 per cent to 6,993, while academic studies in education were up 17.3 per cent to 2,787.
