Ian Nash’s article about Lewisham College’s excellent inspection report (TES, July 7) presents an image of the college, its students and its local area that is unrecognisable to anyone who works or studies here.

“Crack City” has never existed outside the fantasies of Sunday Times’ Insight journalists about life in Deptford in 1985. The article refers to a “disaffected under-class”, but the college’s students impressed the inspectors with their conduct, their enthusiasm and their directness, which are borne out by a record of good achievement.
