It’s a funny old world. During the parliamentary inquiry into the curriculum, the Conservatives’ Lord James Douglas-Hamilton appears to be calling on the Executive to produce central “guidance” to halt the decline in various school subjects.

This unusual call from the right for state intervention prompted equally unusual opposition - from the people’s republic of Stirling. “The market will take care of that,” Margaret Doran, the council’s head of schools, declared to MSPs last week.
