Margery Browning, chief inspector of directorate 5 - the section that does in (er, reviews? - Ed) local authority education departments - also departed last week but only to pastures new.
One of the most highly respected inspectors, she has retired after 22 years as an HMI to concentrate on education at Edinburgh university, after signing up for a two-year postgraduate course on counselling.
She has just taken part in freshers’ week but declined to comment on the experience. Perhaps, like fellow students, she can’t remember a thing about it. But probably not.
