As a temporary measure last term, the council paid fees to Glasgow City Council to allow children to complete the school year. From August parents who send their children to city nurseries will have to meet the cost themselves. Glasgow was charging parents who lived outwith the city up to Pounds 50 a week.
Alan Dick, South Lanarkshire’s education convener, said Pounds 300,000 had been allocated this year to fund building improvements for nursery places. Some Pounds 66,000 has been spent on four sites in Rutherglen and Cambuslang.
Mr Dick admitted: “There will still be pressure on places and some parents will be disappointed. There just are not enough to go round in South Lanarkshire.”
