FErret - More designs on the future

Last week, John Denham, the Skills Secretary, called on further education to do its bit to pull the economy out of its nosedive by training the unemployed, stimulating spending and promoting entrepreneurship.
FErret is pleased to report that our sector has already been hard at work, providing a much-needed financial stimulus for that most neglected group, the UK’s hard-pressed graphic designers.
A flurry of new organisations will mean more work designing logos to keep these indispensable men and women in rimless glasses for the foreseeable future.
Eagerly awaited in 2010 are the two replacements for the Learning and Skills Council, which face a challenge in surpassing the work of the bright spark who once typed “gt;lsc” and called it a day.
But the first fruits came as the Learning and Skills Improvement Service - oh, you remember, the replacement for CEL and QIA that replaced the LSDA - unveiled its corporate identity on Monday at the glitzy STAR Awards.
Roger McClure, the LSIS boss, had to endure a moment of embarrassment when he first pressed the button to do the big reveal . only for nothing to happen.
For those who missed it, FErret can reveal the quango’s letterheads will be adorned with a sort of cross between a gymnast’s ribbon and a coil of cigarette smoke.
Our expert logo interpreters say that the ribbon represents the thread of quality running through FE and the smoke represents what college staff will have to go for while they wonder what comes next.
