* The visual arts are not part of the official Edinburgh Festival, but watch out for Jewellery Moves, at the Royal Museum in Chambers Street until January.
With over 400 exhibits by studio jewellers from 24 different countries, this stunning display shows what artists can do with materials ranging from silver and gold to telephone directories and pigs’ bladders.
Because of the tactile nature of jewellery, and ease with which anyone can make a simple start, a “Changing room’’ has been set up, where visitors can plough into mosaic tiles, multicoloured plastics, beads and bric-a-brac, and make jewellery with the help of a visiting artist (Wednesdays to Sundays, 1-5pm).For details of school workshops in November, contact education officer Emma Webb, tel: 0131 247 4267.
* Fans of Harry Potter can meet his inventor, JK Rowling, tomorrow at 10am and next Friday at 1.45pm at the Edinburgh Book Festival in Charlotte Square.
Although aimed primarily at 8-14 year olds, the young boy’s adventures at Hogwart’s school of wizardry have held readers aged five to 75 spellbound since the appearance last year of the award-winning Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Those not yet flying through the second instalment - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - can buy a copy in the children’s book tent.
* Two more weeks to go of the British Youth Orchestras Festival at the Festival Fringe. Over the next week audiences in Edinburgh - and Glasgow - can hear string and jazz orchestras and wind and guitar ensembles from Leicestershire, West Glamorgan, Fife, East Dunbartonshire and East Sussex.
