November 2 Anniversary of the Crowning of Haile Selassie (Rastafarian) Commemorating the coronation of Haile Selassie I, emperor of Ethiopia from 1930-1974.

November 2 All Souls Day (Christian) The souls of the dead are prayed for on this day. Originally it was celebrated by monks who prayed for the souls of their departed brothers.

November 7 Diwali (Sikh) The event is shared as a festival of light with Hindus, but the Sikh also recall events in the history of the Golden Temple of Amritsar.

November 11 and 12 Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday The Great War of 1914-1918 ended at 11am on November 11. Services were traditionally held on that day and, at 11am, a minute’s silence was observed to commemorate those who died. The service was later oved to the nearest Sunday, which became Remembrance Sunday, but recently the custom of observing the actual day has been revived.

November 11 Lailat-Ul-Bara’h (Muslim) A person’s life for the coming year is set by God on this night, and Muslims therefore believe they must pray forforgiveness. All-night prayers sometimes take place.

November 27-December 27 Ramadan (Muslim) A month of fasting, forgiveness and charity. The theme is to obey God’s commands . Muslims take no food or drink between sunrise and sunset.

November 30 St Andrew’s Day (Christian) In the Bible, Andrew was the fisherman, brother of Simon Peter, called by Jesus to leave his nets and become a fisher of men. He is said to have ended his life crucified on an X-shaped cross - the shape that forms part of the Union flag of Great Britain, representing Scotland, one of the countries of which Andrew is patron saint.
