Almost a fifth of pupils are entering secondary school without meeting basic standards in literacy, numeracy and science, according to figures released by the Conservatives. Shadow education minister Angela Burns said it was “scandalous” that pupils in deprived areas were performing badly despite investment in anti-poverty schemes. The Welsh Government said it was working with local authorities to make sure all pupils reached their potential.
