I notice that Westhill Academy in Aberdeenshire was quoted as 340th in the Keith Topping table on exam results (TESS, January 23).

It is worth noting that they could be first equal if 714.6 per cent of the pupils managed to get three or more Highers. That makes it a fair system, doesn’t it!

The formula is based on the 53.6 weighted score for Hillpark Secondary in Glasgow, which came first, and the 16 per cent average free meal entitlement for Scotland as a whole - 53.6 divided by the school’s FME of 1.2 per cent divided by 16 per cent.

In other words, schools with low FME stand no chance of doing well.
